Diego Armando Maradona says he would like Napoli to have a Lionel Messi, but insists the Barcelona ace will never be able to experience what he went through in the 1980s.
Maradona played for Napoli from 1984 to 1991, winning two Serie A titles, once the Italian Cup and once the UEFA Cup during his turbulent stay in San Paolo.
Messi’s Barcelona faced Napoli last night in San Paolo in a 1/8 final of the Champions League, which ended with a 1:1 draw.
Maradona talked about Messi and Napoli before last night’s showdown.
“I would have liked to face Messi. He arrived in San Paolo when the team was down,” Maradona said.
“Messi has never experienced what I have experienced, but he can play safely in Naples,” he added.
“Messi will not be able to do what I did, to clarify this, but I would love for the Neapolitan to have a Messi,” he said.
Maradona is said to have struggled to fend for himself in a privately-run environment like Napoli, after repeatedly complaining about lack of privacy while playing for the team.
