Tony Kroos has revealed he has failed to move to Manchester United because the English club lost interest in him shortly after firing coach David Moyes and that Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez had tried to persuade him to join Liverpool.
The World Cup winner with Germany was preparing to leave Bayern Munich in the summer of 2014 and as one of the best midfielders in European football his interest in him was certainly not lacking.
United were leading the race for him, with Moyes having made Kroos a prime target in the summer.
He was, however, fired and replaced by Louis van Gaal and the Dutch coach chose not to care about Kroos.
This opened the door for other clubs, with the Anfield stars having done their best to persuade Kroos to join Liverpool before he finally chose Real Madrid.
Asked about the interest shown by Gerrard and Suarez, Kroos said: “It wasn’t a straightforward conversation, but they offered a willingness to tell me more about the club and so on.”
As for United, Kroos added: “David Moyes came to meet me and the contract was practically done. But Moyes was fired and Louis van Gaal came to the club, which compiled things.”
“Louis wanted time to build his own project. I hadn’t heard a word from United for a while and I began to doubt it. Then the World Cup started and Carlo Ancelotti called me. That was all,” he revealed.
